Part II

THE DANCE PATTERNS

This segment will present the core rhythm of the dance as well as multiple timings that break on2. An important component of mambo is a dance term called the break. A break simply means a change in direction which occurs when stepping forward with the left foot or back with the right foot followed by a step with the opposite foot. This does not mean that dancing or breaking on2 is the right way to dance to salsa music. However, I feel, that it is the best representation of the clave through dance. This allows us to better express ourselves as a physical representation of the rhythms in the music.

To better make sense of how the rhythms of dance and the rhythms of music relate to each other we must bear in mind that, typically, we do not dance the exact pattern of the clave but use aspects of the clave rhythm to keep us synchronized. This is compatible with how the instrumental rhythms correlate with the clave.

Be prepared for revelations! Once you practice the following information you will feel like a character right out of a Star Wars movie: A Jedi! That’s right! A mambo Jedi! Because when you make the connection between dance and music you will feel like the force is with you! Or should I say, like the clave is with you?! You be the judge! (Don’t say I didn’t warn you!) ; - }

Let’s begin.

Note: The AOTC Practice & Counting CD also has the clave rhythm mixed with the tumbao rhythm of the conga for approximately 30 minutes. This affords the listener an opportunity to dance to these segregated rhythms.

*Many salsa/mambo performance groups from New York maintain that the men lead (break) forward on beat six. This allows the ladies to follow all patterns and figures at the beginning of the musical phrase.

The complete breakdown on the
Classic Mambo (2,3,4 - 6,7,8); *Modern Mambo (1,2,3 - 5,6,7); (ADVANCED MAMBO TIMINGS) *Hybrid Mambo (2,3 - 5,6,7,8 or 1,2,3,4 - 6,7) and *Dancing the Clave (2, 3 - 5, 6&, 7, 8 or 1, 2&, 3, 4 - 6, 7)
sections of the dance patterns can be found on the booklet that accompanies the CD.
