Estrada, Ricardo

pu.gif (2037 bytes)A native of Los Angeles, Ricardo is a percussionist, composer and producer with a degree in music, and extensive studies of folkloric, traditional, and modern Afro-Cuban Music in Cuba. On stage, he has shared billing with Willie Colon, El Gran Combo, Louie Bellson and Pete Christleib, as well as Los Lobos, Angela Bofill, James Moody and Joe Williams. Ricardo has also recorded with El Chicano, Carl Anderson, EmbraSamba, Francisco Aguabella, Steve Loza's UCLATINO, Hubert Laws, Delbert Taylor, Claire Fischer, Rob Mullins, Wilton Felder, Moacir Santos, Los Lobos, Freddie Hubbard, Ronnie Laws. Ricardo has appeared on TV shows and educational videos on Latin music, most recently the Cuban Drumming videos with Pete and Sheila E.  Ricardo has toured the U.S., Mexico, the Caribbean and New Zealand, and was a member of the Broadway show Season's Reason's.  Ricardo's recent CD, "Que Rico Moazambique" is loaded with original material and some of the finest Latin/jazz musicians in LA. Currently Ricardo teaches at LACC, and also directs his own full-band Latin Music workshop, one of the most popular music workshops in LA. His current projects include a CD/book: Ritmos Cubanos, with Long John Oliva, and guest artists Fred Ramirez and Carlos Puerto.

Figueroa, Virjilio

Taught and mentored by his legendary Afro-Cuban music pioneer uncles, Arsenio Rodriguez and Raul Rodriguez Travieso, Bronx, NY-born Virjilio began instruction in Afro-Cuban percussion at age 15. Continuing his education he excelled in the principles of Afro-Cuban religious batá drumming with Jesus Alfonso (musical director of Los Muñequitos de Matanzas), Alfredo Calvo Cano, and Esteban “Chacha” Domingo (whom all hail from Matanzas, Cuba). In the U.S., Virjilio learned and performed with master drummers Julio Collazo, Lázaro Galarraga and Francisco Aguabella with whom he played for 18 years as part of Aguabella's religious Bata Group and folkloric ensemble. Justo Betancourt, Angel “Cachete” Maldonado ensemble, René Touzet, Johnny “Chano” Martinez, Dandy Beltran, Albertico Perez, Camilo “Azuquita”, Tito Nieves, Melcochita, Lefty Perez, Ray Ramos y su Sonora, Los Hermanos Crespo y su Conjunto Costa Azul are some of the numerous Afro-Cuban and salsa bands with which Virjilio has performed. Additionally, Virjilio was a percussionist for Johnny Polanco y su Conjunto Amistad from 1993 to 1998. Currently, he has been lecturing at area colleges on the religious ideology and Bata religious drumming of the Cuban Santería Orisha Worship.

Afro-Cuban Percussion: Bata and shekere instruction focusing on understanding Afro-Cuban rhythms relevant to Santería religious principles. Clave patterns are used to translate basic Afro-Cuban rhythms.

Goldschmidt, Jerome

pu.gif (2037 bytes)Obtained a gold medal at the conclusion of the final examinations of percussion in the French Republic City of Metz and a first interregional award of excellence in Chamber Music at the Conservatory of Music of the City of Luxembourg. He then went to Paris where he started playing with Iluyenhori, an Afro-Cuban Folkloric band, with whom he recorded two albums. His love to Latin-Music brought him to Cuba and New York. On the Caribbean Island, he studied with Jose Luis Quintana (Changuito), Roberto Vizcaino, Mario Jauregui, Alberto Villareal and different members of the group of Clave y Guaguncó. In New York, he worked with such great artists as Louis Bauzo, Johnny Almendra, Ray Romero or Eddie Rodriguez and recorded an album with Mongo Santamaria. In 1997, he came back to New York to pursue his interest in Afro-Cuban music. Since then he has been involved playing in many groups such as Los Jovenes del Barrio, Patakin, Victor Rendon's Latin Jazz Orchestra. Grupo Caribe, The Latin Coalition, Tito Puente and La India.

Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts

The conservatory specializes in Latin (primarily Afro-Cuban) music, percussion and folklore but also offers classical music, dance and theatre training.

Born in New York City, of Puerto Rican descent, Robertito learned percussion at the Ile Ife Percussion School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania studying all Latin percussion and Brazilian rhythms.
