MAMBO!
That's what's goin' on this weekend beginning this
Thursday!! Want to know more? Okay, I'll tell ya!!!
Activities for the 1st Annual Southern California Mambo Conference:
THURSDAY - 23 Aug 01
Join us as we start the weekend with on2 dance instruction (for all
levels) by Fabia Ochoa and a night of dancing at the Torrance Mariott (3635 Fashion Way,
Torrance, CA 90503, 310-543-6024).
There will be a Mambo Conference Shuttle which
will only pick up Mambo Conference registrants (names maintained on a
list with the driver) from the Torrance Courtyard Del Amo's main entrance at 7 PM to
the Torrance Marriott's club entrance and will bring them back at the end of the night.
Please be there on time. The driver will only wait for five minutes. If you miss the
shuttle you will have to provide for your own transportation to the Torrance Marriott but
you can still return with the shuttle.
FRIDAY - 24 Aug 01
Now that we got warmed up on Thursday we continue to kick
things off with more on2 dance instruction. This time Fabia's husband,
William Ochoa, as well as Laura Canellias will be the instructors followed by the
fantastic big band sound of Freddy Crespo &
His Mambo Revue! This will be
another great time for all of the attendees of the Mambo Conference to
get together, meet each other (as well as the Mambo Conference Instructors),
dance to great music (both live and pre-recorded) and watch some of the greatest dancers
in the West Coast strut their stuff on the dance floor. Remember that all registrants to
the Mambo Conference will be admitted at the discount price of $10 (all others $15). A
list will be kept with the cashier so just mention that you're a Mambo Conference attendee,
give them your name and 10 bucks and then you're in! NOTE: The band and the special discount is provided
courtesy of Albert Torres Productions. There will be tables inside for the Mambo Conference attendees
so be sure to mingle!
The Mambo Conference Shuttle will only
pick up the Mambo Conference registrants from the Torrance Marriott's
main entrance at 6:30 PM and the Torrance Courtyard Del Amo's main
entrance shortly thereafter to the Sportsmen's Lodge ballroom entrance and will bring them
back at the end of the night. Please be there on time. The driver will only wait for five
minutes. If you miss the shuttle you will have to provide for your own transportation to
Sportsmen's Lodge but you can still return with the shuttle. If you miss the shuttle at
Sportsmen's Lodge you will have to provide for your own transportation on the return
trip to the hotels.
SATURDAY - 25 Aug 01
Registration and sign-in for Day-1 of the 1st Annual Southern California Mambo Conference begins at 9 AM SHARP where
everyone will get either the Saturday Pass or Weekend Pass wristbands for the event!
The South Bay Dance Center is located in a large shopping area. We ask that all those
driving to the South Bay Dance Center park their vehicles either in the parking lot on the
Lomita Avenue side (approximately 350 feet from the building), curbside on Lomita Avenue
or curbside on Western Avenue. Again, the Mambo Conference Shuttle will
only pick up the Mambo Conference registrants from the Torrance
Marriott's main entrance at 8:45 AM and the Torrance Courtyard Del Amo's
main entrance shortly thereafter to the South Bay Dance Center's main entrance and will
bring them back at the 6:15 PM. Please be there on time. The driver will
only wait for five minutes. If you miss the shuttle you will have to provide for your own
transportation to the South Bay Dance Center but you can still return with the shuttle. If
you miss the shuttle at the South Bay Dance Center you will have to provide for your own
transportation on the return trip to the hotels.
The first workshop, Salsa Music Rhythm, Phrasing &
Timing, is for all levels and will be a great prelude for the rest of the workshop
weekend. It might be a good idea to bring pencil and paper to take notes.
There is a short lunch break from 12:45 PM to 1:30 PM. We
suggest either bringing a lunch or eating at one of the local eateries.
The workshops resume at 1:30 PM and end at 6 PM. Studio A
will remain open afterwards for practice dancing while the other two studios (B and D)
will close for the night. Remember, those staying at the hotel can grab the shuttle at 6:15
PM.
The fun is not over, though. Doors will open for the
general public ($10 in advance, $15 at the door) at 7:45 PM where DJ Tony "El Tigueron" will kick things off
spinning great salsa tunes! Those with
Mambo Conference wristbands need only flash their wristbands at the desk. All others must
get their hands stamped at the door.
Son y Clave will begin their first set at 8:30 PM. This group is one of my favorite bands in
Los Angeles and if you've heard them before then you know what I mean. If you haven't
heard them then you're in for a real treat! There will be a couple of performances between
sets especially one by attendees of Janette Valenzuela's "Dance Company
Audition" workshop! Son y
Clave will do their second set at 10:15 PM and DJ Tony "El Tigueron" will finish out the night.
There's one small drawback, we all have to be out of the
building by midnight. I fought long and hard to try to go to 1 AM. In fact, I was
told that we had to leave at 11:30 PM due to some parking logistics. But, I won out.
So...anyway, the Mambo Conference Shuttle will leave at 12:15 right by
the exit. Again, those eligible for the shuttle will be responble for their own
transportation should they miss the ride.
SUNDAY - 26 Aug 01
Day-2 also begins at 9 AM sharp but only for those coming
for the Sunday Pass wristbands. All those with the Weekend Pass wristbands will have a
half-hour grace period. That's when the first workshops begin: at 9 :30 AM. The schedule
is pretty much the same except that the doors will open for general admission ($5) to DJ Tony "El Tigueron" at 7 PM.
VENDORS...THERE ARE STILL BOOTHS
AVAILABLE. CALL OR EMAIL NOW TO GET A GREAT DEAL ON A WEEKEND BOOTH!

AOTC,
Mike,
New Annual Event:
1st Annual Southern California Mambo Conference!!!
To all the Mambo Heads
(Salseros are part of this designation) on the West Coast!!
I have great news! This August 25th (and quite possibly the
26th as well) I will be holding the very first ever Mambo
Conference. This event will have a focus on
sharing information relative to the clave and dancing on2. If you're not sure what that
means then go to the following for more information (www.mambofello.com/new_smrp&t.htm).
The following instructors (myself included) are confirmed for this event:
Bethana Rosario, David Lenneman, Harry Bowens,
Janette Valenzuela, Joby Vazquez, Joe Cassini, Laura Cannelias, Manuel Ramos, Mike Bello,
Oscar Ramirez, Rene Victor and Seaon Bristol
All of the information you can possibly get relative to the
music and dance will be covered at this event and for ALL LEVELS. We're shooting for 25
workshops at 1 1/2 hours each with six hours of practice dancing (that's over 40 hours of
dance and related stuff). No one will miss a thing and I mean EVERYTHING: Partnering, Turn
Patterns, Spinning Techniques, Specifics and Details on Music and Rhythm, Connection to
Music Through Dance, Shines (Footwork), and MUCH More!
More detailed information will be forth coming. Attendance is limited to 240 attendees so register early. Registration information will be avialable on the site by the
second week in April. This will be on a first come first served basis. Respond via email
(see below) if you want to be guaranteed a place on the list prior to the
pre-registration.
Take care all!

1st Anniversary
Salsa/Mambo Dance Social Celebration with 100's of $$$'s in Giveaways and More!!!
Okay, Folks, I listen
and respond to ideas and suggestions (of which I received many on splitting up the
prizes). So, the 100's of $$$'s in salsa/mambo stuff that will be given away at the
1st Anniversay of the AOTC Salsa/Mambo Dance Practice Social at Dance Arts Academy (731 S.
La Brea Ave., CA) is as follows:
1. Two 5-packs of mixed Salsa CD's (over 6 hours of music
valued at $75 per 5-pack)
2. The two instructional Salsa/Mambo CD's (a $27 value)
3. A "Salsero on th Move/ AOTC (Always On The Clave)" T-shirt (a $12 value)
4. A miniature conga necklace (a $15 value
5. Two 8-week terms of Salsa/Mambo group dance lessons (valued at $80 each)
Don't forget that there will be a representative from ALT
Films at the social looking for several dozens of dancers of all levels (including
children) for two salsa/mambo dance scenes (party and club) in an upcoming project for PBS
entitled "Almost A Woman."
The social (FREE for kids 12 and under, $3 for 13-17 year
olds and $5 18 and up) begins at 6:30 and ends at 9:30 PM. A FREE shines class will be
taught during the social.
Monthly Shines Class?
You Decide!
The Salsa/Mambo workshops this past weekend (24 Feb 01) in L.A. were very
successful and we all had a very good time! The last workshop, Super Syncopation & Shines, was especially nice. Everyone was able to do all twenty shines
presented. I realize, though, that it may be pretty difficult to remember most of them.
So, this is what I propose: I am willing to have a monthly 2
or 3-hour shines class if I have enough
participation. Email me if
you are interested and let me know what day of the week is good for you. List alternate
days as well. I'd like to be able to offer this to as many people that want it. If there are at least twenty responses
then we will start within the next several weeks!
Take care all!
AOTC,
Mike
Salsa Dancers
Needed For A Movie!;
First Anniversary of L.A.'s Only

There will be a representative from ALT
Films at this weeks Social (Dance Arts Academy, 731 S. La Brea Ave. in Los Angeles at 6:30
PM) looking for Salsa/Mambo approximately 50 - 80 Dancers
of all levels. The following is a brief description:
===================
ALT Films is a production
company producing films based on American literature for Masterpiece Theater
/PBS. Our current project is entitled, "Almost A Woman" by Esmeralda
Santiago, a story about a young Puerto Rican girl's journey to overcome the barriers
of language and cultural stereotypes once arriving to Brooklyn New York in the early
60's. The family tries to forget their hard times by attending a couple of
dances.
At this point, we are looking for atmosphere talent for the scenes which take place at the
neighborhood dance and a night club. We are looking for salsa dancers of all levels
and primary Latinos. If selected to participate on our film, dancer would receive a small
hourly wage in addition to lunch during filming days. The filming dates are planned
at the end of March. If you are interested to be a part of our film please contact Lizette
at altextras@yahoo.com.
====================
So, come down to the social, have a good
time and maybe you'll be a part of the dance scene in "Almost A Woman."
In addition to the
above, this Saturday, March 3rd , happens to be the First Anniversary
of the AOTC Salsa/Mambo
Dance Practice Socials.
I've had over 45 socials since March 4, 2000 and I
want to show my appreciation of the support I've had by giving away 10 Mixed Salsa CD's (a $150 value), both instructional CD's (a $27 value), a
"Salseros On The Move/AOTC" T-shirt (a $12 value), a miniature
conga necklace (a $15 value) and last, but not least, an 8-week term of group Salsa/Mambo dance lessons for two (a $160 value). There could be one to
three lucky winners walking away with over $360 worth of salsa/mambo stuff!!! Let me know if you think one person should get it all or whether it should
be split in three (1. Group Classes, 2. Mixed CD's and 3. Instructional CD's, T-Shirt
& Miniature Conga Necklace).
Remember, the social is only $5 for those 18 and older, $3 for 13-17 year-olds and FREE for kids 12 and under!!! There will also be a FREE Salsa/Mambo shines class with paid admission to the social.
Take care and see you there!

Salsa/Mambo Dance Practice Socials!!
Based on information from several supporters,
I'm asking for feedback on the idea of broadening the music

be a change that would increase your attendance? Do you
have suggestions for changes that would increase your attendance? Please Email me your thoughts. I welcome any and all
